Problem solving and Procedures - How people handle unexpected situations

Aeronatics is heavily based on procedures and automation that must be followed. However, if this kind of approach is very effective and efficient in well-mastered cases where situations can be expected, it may fall short when unexpected situations occur. In this latter case, people need to identify and solve problems that require deeper knowledge and know-how. People in charge need flexibility and appropriate conceptual and technological tools. This is where FlexTech enters into play. In other words, we need to design for flexibility in situations where rigid procedures and automation do not work anymore. We will illustrate FlexTech using crisis management examples, as well as problem-solving in the case of rare but critical events.
